There are thirteen imperial tombs of the Ming Dynasty scattered over an area of forty square kilometers in Changping District in the northwest of Beijing, an area chosen as an auspicious site for the imperial burial grounds and also as an excellent position from a military perspective as the mountains provided a natural defense for the area, as well as for the capital Beijing.
