All Hallows Church, London Wall, City of London, c1901 (1906). All Hallows-on-the-Wall is situated adjacent to London Wall, the former city wall of London. The present church was constructed by George Dance the younger (1741-1825) in 1767, replacing an earlier church built around the 12th century on a bastion of the old Roman wall. It became renowned for its hermits, who lived in cells in the church. From Medieval London, Vol. II - Ecclesiastical by Sir Walter Besant. [Adam & Charles Black, London, 1906]

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the timeless beauty of All Hallows Church, located on London Wall in the heart of the City of London. Constructed in 1767 by George Dance the younger, this church replaced a much older structure dating back to the 12th century. The site itself holds historical significance as it stands adjacent to London Wall, which once served as a protective barrier for the city. All Hallows-on-the-Wall gained fame for its hermits who resided within cells inside the church. This unique aspect added an air of mystique and spirituality to this medieval Christian place of worship. The bell tower proudly rises above, adding architectural grandeur to its surroundings. The monochrome aesthetic adds a touch of nostalgia and allows us to appreciate every intricate detail etched into this engraving from Sir Walter Besant's book "Medieval London". As we gaze upon this image captured around 1901-1906, we are transported back in time to witness a glimpse of British history. This print is not just an artistic representation; it serves as a reminder that even amidst modernization and progress, there are still remnants of our past that deserve recognition and preservation. It invites us to reflect on our heritage and appreciate the rich cultural tapestry woven throughout Britain's landscapes.
