Chaplin Court Treatt and Stella Court Treatt, British motoring pioneers, c1924-c1926 (1927). The notion of a Pan-African Highway crossing the continent from north to south was a British imperial dream that first emerged in the 1890s. In 1918, when Tanganyika passed from Germany to Britain after the First World War, it became theoretically possible to make the journey exclusively on British territories. Chaplin Court Treatt (1888-1954), a British former Major in the Royal Flying Corps, led the first expedition to successfully drive from Cape Town to Cairo. Leaving Cape Town on 23 September 1924, the expedition, in two Crossley light trucks, arrived in Cairo on 24 January 1926. Treatt and his wife Stella made a film of the expedition and she also wrote a book about the journey, Cape to Cairo, published in 1927. The highway did not come to fruition however. EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the indomitable spirit of Chaplin Court Treatt and Stella Court Treatt, British motoring pioneers, during their groundbreaking journey from Cape Town to Cairo in the 1920s. The image, captured by artist Thomas A Glover, showcases the couple standing proudly beside their Crossley light trucks that carried them across vast stretches of African terrain. Chaplin Court Treatt, a former Major in the Royal Flying Corps, led this historic expedition which began on September 23rd, 1924. With unwavering determination and an adventurous spirit coursing through their veins, they traversed British territories along what was once envisioned as a Pan-African Highway. This ambitious dream had been nurtured since the late 19th century by British imperialists. The arduous journey finally culminated in Cairo on January 24th, 1926 - a triumph for both man and machine. Stella Court Treatt not only accompanied her husband but also documented their incredible feat through film-making and writing. Her book "Cape to Cairo" published in 1927, immortalized their extraordinary adventure. While the grand vision of a Pan-African Highway never materialized as originally conceived by its architects, this photograph stands as a testament to human resilience and exploration against all odds. It serves as a reminder that dreams may evolve or fade away entirely but it is our pursuit of them that defines us as individuals and shapes history itself.
