Charles X, King of France, 19th century
Charles X, King of France, 19th century. The brother of Louis XVI and Louis XVIII, Charles (1757-1836) came to the throne in succession to the latter in 1824. His coronation, at the traditional site of Reims, was a grandiose affair comparable in scale (and cost) to that of George IV of England in 1821. In style his rule harked back to the pre-revolutionary Ancien Regime, making him unpopular with the liberal elements of French society. In 1830 he elected to abdicate rather than rule as a constitutional monarch

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the regal presence of Charles X, King of France in the 19th century. As the brother of Louis XVI and Louis XVIII, Charles ascended to the throne in 1824 after his predecessor's passing. His coronation at Reims was a magnificent spectacle reminiscent of George IV's grand ceremony in England four years prior. Charles X's reign mirrored the traditions and values of the pre-revolutionary Ancien Regime, which clashed with the liberal sentiments prevailing among French society. This ideological divide made him unpopular with progressive factions within his kingdom. In 1830, facing mounting pressure for reform, he chose to abdicate rather than rule as a constitutional monarch. The portrait showcases Charles X dressed in an elaborate military uniform befitting his royal status. The engraving emphasizes his authority and stature as a ruler while also hinting at his involvement in wars during his time on the throne. This monochrome image not only provides us with a glimpse into French history but also serves as a testament to Charles X's sovereignty and influence over his country. Preserved by The Print Collector, this remarkable piece allows us to appreciate both its artistic value and historical significance. "
