Coronation of the Virgin, 1420s. Creator: Fra Angelico (Italian, 1400-1455)
Coronation of the Virgin, 1420s. This pictures original use is uncertain. Its size and shape are appropriate for a predella (the pedestal portion of an altarpiece), which often consists of several small panels. However, the Coronation of the Virgin almost never appears on predellas. The panels minute detail and rich finish suggest it may have been an object for private devotion. This is believed to be an early work by Fra Angelico, whose real name was Guido di Pietro, a Dominican monk in Florence. Here, an angel holds the Virgins train while she kneels to receive the crown offered by Christ. The scene glimmers with gold; the thrones are draped with starry tapestries, the walls are hung with gold cloth, and Christ himself radiates light

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the "Coronation of the Virgin" painted by Fra Angelico in the 1420s. The original purpose of this artwork remains uncertain, as its size and shape suggest it could have been part of an altarpiece's predella. However, what makes this piece unique is that depictions of the Coronation of the Virgin are rarely found on predellas. Instead, its intricate details and exquisite finish indicate that it may have served as a personal devotional object. Fra Angelico, also known as Guido di Pietro, was a Dominican monk based in Florence and is believed to be the creator behind this early masterpiece. In this scene, we witness an angel gracefully holding up the train of the Virgin Mary's gown while she humbly kneels before Christ to receive her crown. The entire composition glows with golden hues - from starry tapestries adorning thrones to walls draped in shimmering gold cloth - emphasizing both opulence and divinity. Painted using tempera and gold on wood panel, this remarkable work can now be admired at The Cleveland Museum of Art. Heritage Art/Heritage Images has beautifully captured every detail in their photo print, allowing art enthusiasts worldwide to appreciate Fra Angelico's skillful brushwork and his ability to infuse light into his subjects.
