EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the exquisite artwork of Giovanni Battista Tiepolo, a renowned Italian Venetian painter and printmaker. Titled "Two Cupids" this piece was created in 1752 as a chalk on paper study for The Death of Hyacinthus. It is now owned by the Museo Nacional Thyssen-Bornemisza in Madrid, Spain, and was also used as inspiration for a ceiling painting in the house of Baron A de Rothschild in Paris. Tiepolo's artistic talent extended beyond Italy, as he worked extensively in Germany and Spain. He received numerous commissions to create frescoes for churches and palaces throughout his career. In addition to his grand-scale works, Tiepolo also excelled at etchings and oil paintings, solidifying his status as one of the most significant artists of his time. This particular illustration comes from Volume II of "The Drawings of Giovanni Battista Tiepolo" by Detlev Baron Von Hadeln, published by The Pegasus Press in Paris in 1928. The image beautifully captures an allegorical representation featuring two young cupids – symbolizing love – rendered with remarkable detail. With its monochrome aesthetic and timeless subject matter, this print serves as a testament to Tiepolo's mastery and enduring legacy within the art world.
