EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the portrait of Principe Don Carlos, son of Felipe II, created by the talented artist Alonso Sanchez Coello. Painted in oil on canvas, this artwork is currently held in the prestigious Museo del Prado in Madrid. The portrait depicts a young Prince Carlos de Austria during his reign from 1557 to 1559. Prince Carlos was born on July 8,1545, in Valladolid and was proclaimed Prince of Asturias at the age of fifteen. However, he suffered from mental instability which led to his imprisonment by his own father in 1568. Tragically, after six months spent in solitary confinement within Madrid's walls, he passed away on July 24th that same year. In this striking portrayal, Prince Carlos stands tall wearing an elegant fur-trimmed jacket and hat that reflect his royal status. His direct gaze captures both curiosity and vulnerability as it meets the viewer's eyes across centuries. The painting not only serves as a historical record but also offers insight into the challenges faced by individuals with mental illness during that era. It symbolizes a poignant reminder of how society dealt with such conditions at a time when understanding and compassion were limited. Alonso Sanchez Coello masterfully captured both the physical appearance and inner turmoil experienced by Prince Carlos through this remarkable piece of art.
