EDITORS COMMENTS
This print takes us back to the year 1896, aboard the training ship HMS Impregnable in Devonport, Devon. The artist, WM Crockett, beautifully captures a moment of action as sailors reef topsails high up on the mast. These young cadets in their naval uniforms are seen fearlessly climbing amidst rigging and ropes. HMS Impregnable holds a significant place in history as it was once a second-rate ship of the line before being repurposed as a training vessel in 1862. In 1886, she was replaced by HMS Howe but retained her name for future ships that served under it until its decommissioning in 1948. The image evokes a sense of adventure and discipline within this Victorian-era maritime setting. It showcases the dedication and skill required by these men to navigate through treacherous waters during times of war. The monochrome aesthetic adds an air of nostalgia, emphasizing the timeless nature of naval warfare. As we observe this snapshot frozen in time, we can't help but appreciate the bravery displayed by these sailors who dedicated themselves to serving their country at sea. This print serves as both a historical document and an artistic representation that transports us back to an era where sailing ships ruled the waves.
