This print showcases the remarkable Roman water channel in Salamis, North Cyprus. Steeped in history, Salamis boasts a rich archaeological heritage dating back to the 11th century BC. The remains found here provide evidence of Phoenician and Assyrian settlements, with the city later becoming an influential Greek city-state. During Roman times, Salamis flourished as a significant urban center, leaving behind impressive ruins that still stand today. However, this once-thriving city faced its fair share of challenges. The intricate water channel depicted played a crucial role in supplying water throughout the city. Photographer Peter Thompson skillfully immortalizes this abandoned yet awe-inspiring site through his lens. This photograph is more than just an artistic portrayal; it serves as a window into our shared cultural heritage—a reminder that even amidst decay and abandonment lies immense historical value waiting to be discovered and appreciated for generations to come.
