For the Sake of These!, 1871. Artist: Joseph Swain

For the Sake of These!, 1871. Peace holds the little children of France by the hand, as the starving and mourning citizens surround her. This relates to Frances war against Prussia in which France had suffered much loss. Prussian troops had besieged Paris and, after more than 130 days and under continual bombardment, Paris had surrendered at the end of January 1871. Negotiations for peace were ongoing, but the terms demanded by the newly unified Germany were considered harsh. France, however, had little alternative but to agree. From Punch, or the London Charivari, February 11, 1871

For the Sake of These!, 1871

EDITORS COMMENTS
is a powerful and poignant print that captures the devastating aftermath of France's war against Prussia. Created by artists Joseph Swain and John Tenniel, this engraving depicts an allegorical figure of Peace holding the hands of frightened and malnourished children in France. Surrounded by starving and mourning citizens, Peace stands as a symbol of hope amidst despair. The image reflects the harsh reality faced by France during this tumultuous period. After enduring over four months of bombardment and siege by Prussian troops, Paris finally surrendered in January 1871. The negotiations for peace were ongoing, but Germany's demands were considered severe. With little alternative, France reluctantly agreed to these terms. This print serves as a visual representation of the suffering endured by innocent civilians caught in the crossfire of war. The emotional impact is heightened through Swain's detailed depiction of crying women pleading for mercy while their thin and fragile children cling to them for comfort. The monochrome style adds depth to their expressions, emphasizing their vulnerability. "For the Sake of These!, 1871" serves as a reminder that wars have far-reaching consequences beyond battlefields. It calls attention to the human cost paid by ordinary people who are often forgotten in historical narratives dominated by military strategies and political maneuvering. This heritage image partnership between Swain and Tenniel continues to evoke empathy towards victims affected by conflict even after more than a century since its creation.
