EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the magnificent Sandstone Temple of Edfu, a sacred monument dedicated to the falcon-headed god Horus in Egypt. Created by renowned Scottish artist David Roberts in 1838, this lithograph beautifully captures the intricate details and grandeur of this ancient temple. Built during the Ptolemaic period between 237 and 57 BC, the temple stands as a testament to the rich history and religious significance of ancient Egyptian civilization. The temple's stunning architecture is adorned with elaborate carvings and hieroglyphics that depict stories from Egyptian mythology. Roberts' extensive travels throughout Egypt and the Holy Land allowed him to capture breathtaking scenes like this one. His sketches were later transformed into lithographs by Louis Haghe, a prominent Victorian lithographer known for his exceptional attention to detail. Today, this particular print can be found at the Victoria & Albert Museum in London, serving as a reminder of both Roberts' artistic talent and Egypt's rich cultural heritage. As we gaze upon this image, we are transported back in time to witness not only the architectural marvels but also feel a sense of reverence for Horus - an important deity worshipped by ancient Egyptians.
