Tetley shire horses and dray, Joshua Tetley Brewery, Leeds, West Yorkshire, 1966
Tetley shire horses and dray, Joshua Tetley Brewery, Leeds, West Yorkshire, 1966. The world famous shire horses gave service to the company for 184 years and started their work when Joshua Tetley established his brewery in Leeds in 1822, and used the horses to pull the drays. As deliveries of the barrels started to be made by lorry, the shire horses were kept on for ceremonial and promotional purposes, but the Danish owners of Tetleys decided to retire the horses in August 2006 due to the rising cost of their upkeep. The last horses used to pull the drays were retired to the Bankside Shire Stud in Thurstonland near Holmfirth

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the iconic Tetley shire horses and dray, symbolizing a rich history of brewing excellence. Taken in 1966 at the Joshua Tetley Brewery in Leeds, West Yorkshire, this image pays homage to these magnificent creatures that faithfully served the company for an impressive 184 years. Since its establishment by Joshua Tetley in 1822, the brewery relied on these powerful horses to pull their drays as they delivered barrels of their renowned brews. As time went on and deliveries transitioned to lorries, the shire horses remained with the company for ceremonial and promotional purposes. However, in August 2006, due to increasing costs associated with their care, the Danish owners of Tetleys made the difficult decision to retire these beloved animals. The last team of shire horses used for pulling drays found solace at Bankside Shire Stud near Holmfirth. This photograph beautifully encapsulates a bygone era when horse-drawn transportation was commonplace in Britain's industrial landscape. It serves as a poignant reminder of how traditions evolve over time but continue to hold immense cultural significance. Captured by Michael Walters from Paul Walters Worldwide Photography Ltd. , this monochrome image transports us back to a simpler time when craftsmanship and dedication were celebrated values within England's drinks industry.
