Woolen carpet with millefleurs decoration, early 1600s. Creator: Unknown

Woolen carpet with millefleurs decoration, early 1600s. This tour de force of Mughal weaving sets symmetrically intertwined flowering vines against a deep wine-red ground. The small-scale flowers that fill the ground space appear to be so numerous that this type of pattern is given the name millefleurs, " thousand flowers" in French, after a type of medieval European tapestry pattern. The use of pashmina wool indicates that this work was made in Kashmir, near the foothills of the Himalayas in northern India. They lend a silken sheen that augments the carpets luxurious quality. Mughal carpets of this type were prized by Europeans and Americans during the 18th and 19th centuries

EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning print showcases a woolen carpet with millefleurs decoration from the early 1600s. The intricate design, created by an unknown artist, is a true masterpiece of Mughal weaving. Against a deep wine-red background, symmetrically intertwined flowering vines take center stage in this tour de force. The ground space of the carpet is filled with small-scale flowers that are so abundant they give the pattern its name - millefleurs, meaning "thousand flowers" in French. This type of pattern was inspired by medieval European tapestries and became highly sought after by Europeans and Americans during the 18th and 19th centuries. Made in Kashmir, near the foothills of the Himalayas in northern India, this work features pashmina wool which adds to its luxurious quality. The use of pashmina lends a silken sheen to the carpet, enhancing its visual appeal. Heritage Art/Heritage Images has captured every intricate detail of this remarkable piece through their expert photography skills. As we admire this photograph, we can't help but appreciate the rich heritage and artistry behind it. It serves as a testament to the skill and craftsmanship that went into creating such exquisite carpets during the Mughal era. Displayed at The Cleveland Museum of Art, this print allows us to appreciate and celebrate this beautiful example of Indian heritage art for generations to come.
