NORFOLK. The Fens gas pipeline being lifted by a row of Caterpillar 583 pipelayers, with two workers crouched at one end of the pipe.
Work on laying the Fens gas pipeline started in June 1967 and was a joint venture between Laing Civil Engineering and French companies Entrepose and Grands Travaux de Marseille (GTM) for the Gas Council. Over 600 men worked on the project to lay 36 inch diameter steel pipes starting at West Winch in Norfolk and running to where it linked up with the next contract at Woodcroft Castle in Cambridgeshire. The pipeline crossed four rivers and numerous dykes and ditches. This photograph was taken as part of a batch to show the pipeline where it crossed the River Nar

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a significant moment in the construction of the Fens gas pipeline. The image showcases a row of powerful Caterpillar 583 pipelayers, standing tall like giants, as they lift sections of the massive steel pipe into place. Two workers can be seen crouched at one end, diligently ensuring its proper alignment. The Fens gas pipeline project, initiated in June 1967, was a remarkable joint venture between Laing Civil Engineering and French companies Entrepose and Grands Travaux de Marseille (GTM) for the Gas Council. Over 600 skilled men dedicated their efforts to lay these colossal 36-inch diameter steel pipes that stretched from West Winch in Norfolk to Woodcroft Castle in Cambridgeshire. As this photograph focuses on where the pipeline crossed the River Nar, it offers a glimpse into the challenges faced by these determined workers. They had to navigate not only four rivers but also numerous dykes and ditches along their path. This snapshot is an invaluable piece of engineering history that symbolizes human ingenuity and collaboration during an era when North Sea gas exploration was transforming energy supplies across Britain. It serves as a tribute to those who labored tirelessly behind-the-scenes to ensure reliable gas supply for generations to come.
