EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the Tiverton Road Swimming Pool and Fitness Centre, a historic landmark located in Selly Oak, Birmingham. The image focuses on the name stone adorning the flanking walls of the main elevation of the former Tiverton Road Baths, also known as Selly Oak Public Baths. Opened to the public in September 1906, these baths were a hub of activity for both swimmers and spectators alike. With two swimming pools, galleries for onlookers, and private bathing facilities for men and women, this establishment catered to various needs. During winter months, the larger pool was transformed into a versatile space that hosted social events alongside its primary function. In recent years, around 2018 to be precise, this architectural gem underwent a transformation. Now serving as a gymnasium exclusively for students at the esteemed University of Birmingham, it continues to promote health and wellness within its historic walls. The print not only captures an early 20th-century indoor swimming pool but also symbolizes sport and recreation throughout history. It is a testament to our sporting heritage while highlighting how such spaces have evolved over time. From Edwardian-era swim sessions to modern-day fitness routines – this image encapsulates it all without mentioning any commercial use or affiliation with specific companies.
