Butea frondosa, Willd
Watercolour on paper. Hand painted copy of an illustration commissioned by William Roxburgh (1751-1815). In his Flora Indica, Roxburgh describes this species as a rather large tree, common amongst the mountains of the coast, and in Bengal. It flowers in March and April, and ripens its seed in June and July. Roxburgh also gives a long description of some experiments made with the red juice which issues from the bark, and tells how the flowers could be used for dying purposes. The drawing has been inscribed Received from Leopard Man of War 30th November 1791 in an unknown hand
