Doorway Downing Minister Official Prime Prior Restoration Sep16

EDITORS COMMENTS
10 Downing Street, London: A Glimpse into the Past (Circa 1930s) 10 Downing Street, the iconic residence of the British Prime Minister, has stood as a symbol of political power and history for over three centuries. In this photograph, we are taken back in time to the early 1930s, before the building underwent significant restoration and the addition of the terrace to the south towards Whitehall. The image reveals the imposing front façade of the house, with its grand doorway and official door knocker, inviting visitors to the inner sanctum of British government. The intricate detailing of the stonework, the ornate railings, and the lush greenery surrounding the property all contribute to the sense of grandeur and tradition that has long been associated with 10 Downing Street. At this time, the building was in need of repair, having been damaged during World War I and II. It wasn't until the late 1930s that extensive restoration work began, under the direction of architect Basil Idiens. The project involved the replacement of the roof, the repair of the exterior stonework, and the addition of the terrace to the south, which would provide a more formal entrance for dignitaries and world leaders. As we gaze upon this photograph, we are transported back in time, offering us a rare glimpse into the history and evolution of one of the most famous addresses in the world. The image serves as a poignant reminder of the enduring significance of 10 Downing Street as the home and workplace of the British Prime Minister, a role it continues to play to this day.
