The Policemen are dressed in the uniforms of the Bow Street Horse Patrol of 1805. The mounted officers were known as Robin Redbreasts because of their red waistcoats, and were the first policemen to wear a uniform. Date: 1979

EDITORS COMMENTS
In this evocative photograph, taken in 1979, PC Carol Price engages in a conversation with her colleagues PC Dave Edwards and his horse, as well as PC Stephen Cass, all dressed in the historic uniforms of the Bow Street Runners. The setting transports us back in time, as the trio dons the distinctive attire of the Bow Street Horse Patrol, which dates back to 1805. PC Price, the last policewoman ever to wear this uniform on the streets of London, stands proudly amongst her male counterparts. The uniform she wears is the last remaining original in the Metropolitan Police's possession, having first been worn by policewomen in 1919 when they were first introduced to the capital's force. The mounted officers, known as "Robin Redbreasts" due to their red waistcoats, were the first policemen to wear a uniform. Their distinctive top hats and red coats, adorned with gold braid and brass buttons, add to their regal appearance. The horses, an essential part of their patrol, complete the traditional look. As they chat amicably, the trio embodies the rich history of the police force in London. The Bow Street Runners, established in 1749, were the first organized police force in London, and their legacy continues to shape modern-day law enforcement. This photograph serves as a poignant reminder of the past, showcasing the evolution of the police uniform and the important role horses played in patrolling the streets of London.
