1857 Edna Ellen Lyall Plume

EDITORS COMMENTS
Ada Ellen Bayly, born on February 18, 1857, was a prolific and talented English writer who wrote under the nom de plume Edna Lyall. The photograph captures Bayly in her later years, with a serious expression and a hint of a smile playing at the corners of her lips. Her dark hair is pulled back into a neat chignon, and she wears a high-collared, Victorian-era blouse and a delicate necklace. Bayly's writing career began in the late 1880s, and she quickly gained a reputation for her vivid storytelling and evocative prose. She wrote in various genres, including romance, historical fiction, and fantasy, often setting her stories in exotic locales around the world. Her most famous work, "The Broken Promise," was published in 1894 and became a bestseller, cementing her place in literary history. Despite her success, Bayly's personal life was marked by tragedy. She was married twice, both marriages ending in divorce. Her first husband, a soldier, died by suicide in 1885, leaving her with a young daughter to raise on her own. Her second marriage, to a clergyman, ended in separation in 1895. Bayly's writing provided an escape from her personal struggles, and she continued to produce novels at a remarkable pace. She died on January 12, 1903, at the age of 45, leaving behind a legacy of over 30 novels and short stories. Her works continue to be read and enjoyed today, and she is remembered as a pioneering woman writer of her time. This photograph of Ada Ellen Bayly, taken in her later years, serves as a poignant reminder of a life marked by both triumph and tragedy. Her enduring legacy as a writer continues to inspire and captivate readers around the world.
