EDITORS COMMENTS
This hand-colored copperplate engraving, taken from Nicholas Culpeper's "English Family Physician" published in 1792, showcases two distinct plants: Coriander (Coriandrum sativum) and Pimpinell (Aenanthe pimpinelloides), also known as Dropwort. Culpeper (1616-1654), an English botanist, herbalist, and astrologer, was renowned for his comprehensive work "The Complete Herbal," published in 1653. Coriander, depicted on the left, is a widely used herb and spice with a distinctive citrusy and slightly sweet flavor. Its leaves and seeds have been employed for culinary and medicinal purposes for thousands of years. The plant belongs to the Apiaceae family and is native to the Mediterranean region. Pimpinell, or Dropwort, is shown on the right. This herbaceous perennial plant is native to Europe, Asia, and northern Africa. It was used traditionally for various medicinal purposes, including as a diuretic, to promote menstruation, and to relieve pain. The plant's name "Dropwort" comes from its tendency to cause milky sap to drip from the stem when it is bruised. This exquisite engraving, hand-colored with great attention to detail, provides a glimpse into the rich history of herbal medicine and botany during the 18th century. The intricate design and precise labeling demonstrate the meticulousness and dedication of the engraver and the importance of accurate plant identification in the field of herbal medicine.
