EDITORS COMMENTS
In this stunning photograph from 1918, Lady Eileen Orde, née Wellesley, proudly displays her elegant court gown designed by the renowned British designer Elspeth Phelps. Eileen, who was the daughter of the 4th Duke of Wellington, was a talented artist in her own right, known for her work on advertisements, wallpaper designs, and fabric painting. She made headlines as the first woman to be featured in British Vogue and was rumored to have had an affair with the poet Rupert Brooke. Here, Lady Orde wears a satin gown adorned with intricate embroidery and crystals, the epitome of 1920s fashion. The gown's long train adds to its exquisite and elegant appearance. This photograph was published in The Sketch in January 1918, reporting on the birth of her and her husband Captain Cuthbert Julian Orde's first child, a daughter named Julian, or "Doonie," as she was affectionately called. Cuthbert was a WW1 pilot, RAC secretary, and artist best known for his portraits of Battle of Britain pilots. The couple's joyful moment is captured in this timeless image, a testament to their love and the fashionable era in which they lived.
