EDITORS COMMENTS
In this evocative photograph from 1914, the Duchess of Westminster, Constance Edwina Cornwallis-West, is seen amongst a group of dedicated nursing staff at the frontline during World War I. At the time, the Duchess, who was the first wife of the 2nd Duke of Westminster, was working tirelessly as a Red Cross volunteer, running her own hospital in the casino at Le Touquet, France. The Duchess, who is pictured third from the right, is seen here in her nursing uniform, her expression serious and determined as she stands alongside her colleagues. The matron of the hospital, Mrs. Phillips, is seen on the Duchess' right, her arms crossed as she surveys her team with pride. The women around them, all dressed in their nursing uniforms, look focused and resolute, their faces reflecting the challenges they faced in providing care and support to wounded soldiers during the war. The image is a poignant reminder of the vital role that women, including members of the aristocracy, played in the war effort. The Duchess of Westminster's commitment to nursing at the frontline was just one of many examples of the selfless and courageous actions taken by women during this time. This photograph is an important historical record of the contributions made by women during World War I and the essential role that nursing played in caring for the wounded and injured soldiers on the frontline.
