Duchess Maria Marie Pavlovna Romanoff Romanov Sweden
EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative portrait captures Grand Duchess Marie Pavlovna of Russia (1890-1958), also known as Maria Feodorovna in her native language, during her tenure as a gracious and resilient hostess to French General Paul Pau in Russia, amidst the tumultuous backdrop of the First World War. Born a grand duchess of the Romanov dynasty, Marie Pavlovna married Prince Vilhelm of Sweden in 1908, but the union ended in divorce in 1914. As the daughter of Grand Duke Paul Alexandrovich of Russia and Princess Alexandra of Greece and Denmark, Marie Pavlovna was a member of the Russian imperial family and the niece of Tsar Nicholas II. Her marriage to Prince Vilhelm brought her to Sweden, and she became known as Marie Frederikson, Duchess of Hälsingland, Gästrikland, and Värmland. When war broke out in 1914, Marie Pavlovna and her children were stranded in Russia, unable to return to Sweden due to the conflict. She and her family were eventually evacuated to Finland, where they were granted asylum by the Finnish government. During this time, Marie Pavlovna played a crucial role in facilitating diplomatic relations between Russia and France, acting as a liaison between the two warring nations. In this portrait, Marie Pavlovna exudes an air of regal composure and determination, her piercing gaze fixed on the viewer. The photograph, taken in 1915, serves as a poignant reminder of her remarkable resilience and resourcefulness during a time of great upheaval and uncertainty. The intricate details of her elegant attire and the delicate folds of her veil add to the sense of history and tradition that surrounds this extraordinary woman.
