1732 1791 Flood

EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative portrait captures the stern yet thoughtful visage of Henry Flood (1732-1791), an influential Irish statesman and political figure of the late 18th century. Flood's political career began in earnest in 1761 when he was elected as the Member of Parliament for County Cork. He quickly established himself as a formidable orator and a skilled debater, earning him the nickname "Hibernicus Orator" or "The Orator of Ireland." Flood's political beliefs were rooted in the Whig tradition, which advocated for the protection of individual liberties and the rule of law. He was a vocal critic of the British government's policies in Ireland, particularly those that favored the interests of the Anglo-Irish ascendancy at the expense of the Irish Catholic population. Flood's most famous speech, delivered in 1779, was a passionate defense of Catholic emancipation and religious tolerance. Despite his progressive views, Flood was also known for his pragmatism and his willingness to compromise. He served as Speaker of the Irish House of Commons from 1775 to 1782 and was a key figure in the passage of several important pieces of legislation during that period. Flood's political influence waned in the late 1780s, however, as the Irish Revolution began to gather momentum. He died in 1791, leaving behind a complex and nuanced political legacy. This portrait, likely painted in the late 18th century, captures Flood in the prime of his political career. His serious expression and piercing gaze suggest a man deeply engaged in the political issues of the day, while the richly textured fabric of his coat and the intricate detail of his wig attest to the artist's skill and craftsmanship. The portrait offers a glimpse into the world of Irish politics during a turbulent and transformative era, and serves as a reminder of the enduring power of the spoken word in shaping the course of history.
