1873 Crossing Herded Herding Volga
EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative image captures the scene of a group of horses being herded across the expansive River Volga in Russia during the 1870s. The River Volga, Europe's longest river, stretches over 3500 miles from the Valdai Hills in northern Russia to the Caspian Sea. In this photograph, taken in 1873, we see a collection of horses wading through the water, guided by their human handlers who stand waist-deep in the river. The horses, with their coats glistening from the water, appear focused and determined as they make their way to the other side. The people, dressed in traditional Russian clothing, are also seen wading through the water, using long poles to help direct the animals. The serene landscape is dotted with trees and small villages along the riverbanks, adding to the sense of tranquility and rural life. This photograph is a fascinating glimpse into the past, offering a window into the daily life and agricultural practices of rural Russia during the late 19th century.
