He participated in several crusades, including the Seventh Crusade led by King Louis IX, and was present at the Battle of Mansura in 1250, where the French army was defeated. Despite this setback, Joinville continued to serve his king and country, eventually becoming the Master of the Cross and Grand Master of the Hospital of Saint John of Jerusalem. However, it was not until later in life that Joinville gained fame as a historian. In 1307, he began writing his memoirs, which would become known as the "Histoire de Saint Louis," a detailed and insightful account of the life and reign of King Louis IX. The work is considered a valuable primary source for understanding medieval France and the Crusades.
