Meeting of Joan of Arc and Charles VII of France: A Historic Encounter in 15th Century Europe This engraving, created by A-Belin in 1851, depicts a pivotal moment in European history: the meeting between Joan of Arc, the folk heroine and Roman Catholic saint of France, and Charles VII, the future king of France. The Hundred Years War between France and England had been raging since 1337, and the French forces were on the brink of defeat. Joan of Arc, a humble peasant girl from Domrémy, claimed to have divine guidance from saints Michael, Catherine, and Margaret. She donned men's clothing and led the French army to several crucial victories, including the battles of Orléans, Patay, and Rouen. Her military successes paved the way for the coronation of Charles VII in Reims in 1429. However, Joan's military triumphs were short-lived. In 1430, she was captured by the Burgundians and sold to the English. She was put on trial for heresy, and in 1431, she was burned at the stake in Rouen. Her heroic deeds and tragic end have made Joan of Arc a beloved folk heroine and a Roman Catholic saint. This engraving, published by Biblioteca Universal in the Modern Age, captures the essence of this historic encounter between Joan of Arc and Charles VII. The vibrant colors and intricate details bring the past to life, allowing us to witness a moment in history that continues to inspire and captivate us.
