EDITORS COMMENTS
Doctor Prosody's Perilous Voyage through the Whirlpool of Corryvreckan This handcoloured copperplate engraving captures the thrilling moment when Doctor Prosody and his English companions bravely navigate the treacherous waters of the Corryvreckan Whirlpool, located between the islands of Jura and Scarba in Scotland. The doctor, dressed in his formal attire and holding a top hat, gazes intently at the churning waters, no doubt with a mixture of excitement and apprehension. His companions, equally daring, stand in the boat, some aiming guns, while others hold on tight to the sides. The rugged landscape of the Scottish Highlands serves as a dramatic backdrop to this scene. Towering cliffs, covered in lush greenery, rise up on either side of the strait. In the distance, the silhouette of a castle can be seen, perhaps Stirling Castle, a symbol of Scottish history and tradition. Despite the danger, Doctor Prosody and his companions seem undeterred. They are on a tour of discovery, in search of the antique and the picturesque, as documented in William Combes' "The Tour of Doctor Prosody." Their adventure takes them through Scotland, the Hebrides, the Orkney and Shetland Isles, where they encounter various scenes of Scottish life, from hunting and shooting to the colourful world of tartan and kilts. However, not all is peaceful in this neighbourhood. A poacher, dressed in a hood and gaiters, lurks in the background, watching the scene unfold with a wary eye. The doctor and his companions may be on a tour of discovery, but they are also intruding on the local community and its traditions, a theme that runs throughout Charles Williams' picaresque and parodic travelogue. This engraving, drawn and engraved by William Read, is a captivating illustration of the spirit of adventure and the allure of the unknown that drew tourists to Scotland in the early 19th century.
