EDITORS COMMENTS
In this hand-colored copperplate engraving by Antonio Verico, we find the powerful Germanic or Norse deities, Thor and Nehalennia, depicted in all their mythological splendor. Thor, the god of thunder, is shown on the left, armed with his iconic hammer Mjölnir, which he wields with a fierce determination. His golden horned helmet and goat-drawn chariot are also characteristic of this mighty god. On the right stands Nehalennia, the goddess of the sea, fertility, and healing. Her Roman equivalent is known as Hercules Magusanus or Massom Salus (Massonius Laetus). Nehalennia is depicted in a more tranquil and graceful pose, holding a cornucopia and a cup or "bicchiere," from which she seems to be taking a sip. The presence of snakes and centaurs around her suggests her connection to the natural world and the protection of travelers. This engraving is taken from Giulio Ferrario's "Il Costume Antico e Moderno" (The Ancient and Modern Costume of the Peoples of the World), published in Florence in 1844. The work was a popular and influential historical fashion journal among scholars and savants of the time. The image is a testament to the enduring fascination with ancient mythology and the desire to understand the diverse cultural traditions of the past. The intricate details of the engraving, such as the rich textures and vibrant colors, bring the figures to life and transport us to a time when gods and goddesses were believed to play an active role in the lives of people. This image is a must-have for anyone interested in mythology, ancient history, or the history of fashion. This image dates back to 1678 and is a valuable addition to any collection of historical illustrations. It is a reminder of the rich cultural heritage that continues to inspire and captivate us today.
