EDITORS COMMENTS
Marguerite de Valois, also known as Marguerite d'Angouleme, was a remarkable woman of the French Renaissance who left an indelible mark on history as the Queen of Navarre. Born in 1492, she was the eldest daughter of King Charles d'Angouleme and Louise de Savoie. Marguerite's life was filled with drama and intrigue, as she navigated the complex political landscape of the 16th century. In this stunning handcoloured lithograph, Marguerite is depicted in the regal attire of a queen, a testament to her status and power. Her elaborate headdress, adorned with pearls and feathers, frames her elegant face, while her voluminous gown, trimmed with fur, demonstrates the opulence of the royal court. In 1515, Marguerite married Henry II of Navarre, who ruled over the small kingdom of Navarre in the Pyrenees. Their union was a strategic one, designed to strengthen the political position of the House of Valois. Despite the challenges of ruling a distant and often rebellious territory, Marguerite proved to be an effective queen. She oversaw the construction of fortifications, established schools, and promoted trade, earning the respect and loyalty of her subjects. Marguerite was also a patron of the arts and literature, and her court was a center of intellectual and artistic activity. She was known for her beauty, intelligence, and wit, and was a beloved figure among the literary and artistic elite of her time. This beautiful lithograph, taken from the renowned collection "Costumes Historiques de la France" by Paul Lacroix, offers a glimpse into the opulence and grandeur of the French Renaissance court. It serves as a reminder of the remarkable life and legacy of Marguerite de Valois, Queen of Navarre, a woman who defied the expectations of her time and left an indelible mark on history.
