EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the charming facade of the Crown Public House in Gravesend, Kent, as it stood in the 1930s. The image, taken by an unknown photographer, presents a corner view of the pub, with its distinctive red brick exterior and ornate white detailing. The pub, which was located at DA12 1HH, was a proud addition to the historic town of Gravesend, nestled in the heart of its community. The back of the print reveals the pub's rich history, with a trading record dating back to 1929 and 1948. The Crown Public House was once under the ownership of the Charrington and Company Limited, a well-known name in the brewing industry during the 1930s. The photograph was taken in 1935, a time when the pub was still thriving and serving its patrons with a warm welcome and a cold pint. Unfortunately, the Crown Public House, like so many historic buildings, did not survive the test of time. By July 2018, it had been demolished, making way for new developments. This photograph serves as a poignant reminder of the past, offering a glimpse into a bygone era and the memories it holds for generations of locals. The image is part of the extensive collection of historical photographs available at Mary Evans Picture Library, providing a valuable resource for researchers, historians, and anyone with an interest in the history of public houses and the social history of Gravesend and Kent.
