EDITORS COMMENTS
In this striking lithograph, we behold the revered figure of Saint Aloysius Gonzaga, a prince of the House of Gonzaga from Mantua, Italy, who renounced his noble title and worldly possessions to dedicate his life to God and the service of the sick and the poor. Born in 1568 as Louis Gonzague, Duke of Nevers and Prince of Mantua under King Henri III of France, Aloysius was known for his exceptional piety, humility, and devotion from a young age. The image portrays Saint Aloysius in the costume of the Chivalric Order of the Holy Spirit, or Chevaliers du Saint-Esprit, which was founded by King Henri III in 1578. The Order was known for its commitment to the defense of the Catholic faith and the promotion of Christian values. The intricately detailed costume includes a white tunic adorned with a red cross, a red mantle, a white surcoat with the royal fleur-de-lis emblem, and a black velvet cap with a white cross and a red tassel. The illustration was created by Dunand and lithographed by Breton, based on a portrait in Roger de Gaignières gallery portfolio IX 50, published in Paris by Le Bibliophile Jacob under the title "Costumes Historiques de la France." The hand-colored print captures the essence of the saint's pious and noble character, making it a valuable addition to any collection of historical religious art or costumes. Saint Aloysius Gonzaga is venerated as the patron saint of youth, students, and those suffering from contagious diseases. His life and legacy continue to inspire generations of Catholics and non-Catholics alike, as a testament to the power of faith, humility, and selflessness.
