EDITORS COMMENTS
This 18th century view of the Kremlin in Moscow offers a glimpse into the rich history and architectural grandeur of Russia's iconic fortress complex. The image, a handcoloured copperplate engraving by Pietro Giarre from Giulio Ferrario's "Costumes Ancient and Modern of the Peoples of the World," published in Florence in 1847, showcases several of the Kremlin's most notable structures. At the heart of the composition lies the Grand Kremlin Palace, the official residence of the Russian monarchs since the 15th century. Its red-roofed buildings, arranged around sprawling courtyards, exude an air of opulence and power. Adorning the left side of the image are the Annunciation Cathedral and the Assumption Cathedral. The Annunciation Cathedral, with its intricate onion-domed design and golden spires, was the coronation church of the Russian tsars until the 18th century. The Assumption Cathedral, the oldest stone building in the Moscow Kremlin, is the burial place of many Russian rulers, including Ivan the Terrible and Boris Godunov. Dominating the skyline is the Ivan the Great Bell Tower, a masterpiece of Russian architecture and engineering. Completed in 1600, the tower stands at an impressive height of 81 metres and houses the Tsar Bell and Tsar Cannon, two of the largest cast bronze objects in the world. This exquisite engraving not only serves as a testament to the artistic prowess of the 19th century, but also offers a fascinating glimpse into the historical and architectural splendour of the Moscow Kremlin during the 18th century.
