EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures a rare moment of camaraderie between two regal women, Queen Mary of Teck, later Queen Consort of George V of the United Kingdom (1867-1953), and Queen Elisabeth of Belgium, nee Duchess in Bavaria (1876-1965), wife of King Albert I of Belgium (1875-1934). The image, taken between the late 19th and early 20th centuries, showcases the elegant attire and refined demeanor of the two monarchs. Queen Mary, dressed in a stylish hat adorned with a veil and feathers, turns her gaze towards Queen Elisabeth, who is equally resplendent in a hat featuring an extravagant bow and a delicate net veil. Both women exude an air of grace and sophistication, reflecting the opulence of the European royal courts of the era. Elisabeth, born Princess Elisabeth in Bavaria, Germany, was the daughter of Duke Maximilian in Bavaria and Princess Marie Anne of Portugal. She married Albert I of Belgium in 1900, becoming Queen Consort of the Belgians. Mary, on the other hand, was born Princess Mary of Teck in Kensington Palace, London, and was the granddaughter of Princess Victoria, Princess Royal, the eldest daughter of Queen Victoria. She married the future King George V in 1893 and became Queen Consort of the United Kingdom. Despite their different backgrounds and the political tensions between their countries, the friendship between Mary and Elisabeth is evident in this photograph. The image serves as a poignant reminder of the shared history and connections that once bound European royal families together.
