1736 1811 Frontispiece Percival Seamen Sermons Stockdale

EDITORS COMMENTS
This frontispiece image is a portrait of Reverend Percival Stockdale (1736-1811), a prominent Anglican clergyman and author known for his influential work, "Sermons to Seamen." Stockdale dedicated his life to ministering to the spiritual needs of sailors, recognizing the unique challenges they faced at sea. His sermons were designed to provide comfort, guidance, and inspiration to these intrepid men, many of whom were far from home and family for long periods. Born in London, Stockdale was educated at Trinity College, Cambridge, and ordained as a deacon in the Church of England in 1761. He served as a curate in various parishes before being appointed as the chaplain to the Royal Navy in 1771. In this role, he traveled extensively, ministering to sailors in ports around the world. The image depicts Stockdale in the robes of a clergyman, with an open Bible in his left hand and a seaman's hat in his right. The hat symbolizes his dedication to the seafaring community and his efforts to bridge the gap between the religious and secular worlds. The title "Sermons to Seamen" is inscribed at the bottom of the print, along with the publication date of 1775. Stockdale's "Sermons to Seamen" were widely read and highly regarded, and they continue to be of interest to scholars and historians today. They offer a unique insight into the lives of sailors in the late 18th century and the ways in which the Church attempted to meet their spiritual needs. This frontispiece image is a fitting tribute to a man who dedicated his life to the service of others and whose legacy continues to inspire and inform our understanding of this important period in history.
