Curtiss-Cox Model 22 - Texas Wildcat
Curtiss-Cox Model 22 Texas Wildcat at the Morane-Saulnier factory in France. After the almost disastrous first flight of the monoplane Texas wildcat, the team chief Mike Thurston designed biplane wings which were hastily built and fitted at the Morane factory. In the spring of 1920, Texas oil millionaire S. E. J. Cox decided to have two racers built for the James Gordon Bennett race to be held in France the following September. The two aircraft (named Texas wildcat and Cactus Kitten) were hastily designed, built and crated for shipment to France, without the benefit of flight testing. Date: 1920

EDITORS COMMENTS
In this intriguing photograph, the Curtiss-Cox Model 22 Texas Wildcat undergoes modifications at the Morane-Saulnier factory in France. The Texas Wildcat, a monoplane designed for the 1920 James Gordon Bennett race, suffered a near-disastrous first flight, leading team chief Mike Thurston to devise a solution. Thurston designed and hastily built biplane wings, which were then fitted at the Morane factory. In the spring of 1920, Texas oil millionaire S.E.J. Cox made the decision to commission two racers for the upcoming September race in France. The Texas Wildcat and its sister aircraft, named Cactus Kitten, were designed, built, and crated without the advantage of flight testing. This daring approach to aviation showcases the pioneering spirit of the era, as innovations in aircraft design were constantly being pushed to their limits. The Curtiss-Cox Model 22 Texas Wildcat, with its sleek monoplane design, had initially proven to be a risky endeavor. However, the addition of biplane wings at the Morane-Saulnier factory represented a last-minute adjustment that could potentially turn the tide in the race. The photograph captures a pivotal moment in the history of aviation, as the Texas Wildcat undergoes this crucial transformation before its journey to France.
