EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph captures the Vickers 953C Merchantman G-APES (msn 721) during its tenure with Hunting Cargo Airlines in the late 1970s. Originally delivered as a passenger aircraft, G-APES was a Vickers V953 Vanguard, which first took to the skies with British European Airways (BEA) in January 1962. After eight years of passenger service, it underwent conversion to Merchantman standard in April 1970 for operation by BEA Cargo. When BEA and BOAC merged in April 1974 to form British Airways, G-APES continued in operation until it was sold to Air Bridge Carriers in November 1976. The aircraft was later renamed Hunting Cargo Airlines in August 1992. The Merchantman freighters were converted from passenger-carrying Vanguards, and G-APES served diligently until its retirement at East Midlands Airport, UK, in February 1995, after 33 years of dedicated service. The nose section of this historic aircraft is now preserved at the East Midlands Aeropark, offering a glimpse into the rich history of aviation and transportation. This image showcases the versatility of the Vanguard, which served as a passenger plane and later transformed into a cargo freighter. The Vickers 953C Merchantman G-APES played a significant role in the transportation sector, leaving a lasting impact on the industry.
