EDITORS COMMENTS
Pope Julius II (1503-1513) is depicted in this stunning handcolored illustration taken from Georges Duplessis' "Costumes historiques des XVIe, XVIIe et XVIIIe siecles" (Historical costumes of the 16th, 17th and 18th centuries), published in Paris in 1867. The image is based on a fresco by the renowned artist Raphael and expertly lithographed by A. Didier, L. Flameng, and F. Laguillermie. Julius II is shown wearing the traditional papal attire of the time, including a scarlet mozzetta, a short, sleeveless cloak, worn over a white surplice and a cream-colored cassock. The mozzetta, which was a symbol of papal authority, was typically made of velvet or other luxurious fabrics and was often decorated with embroidery or other embellishments. The pope's regal appearance is further accentuated by the intricate details of his headdress, which includes a tiara adorned with precious stones and a triple crown. The illustration also shows Julius II holding a pastoral staff, a symbol of his spiritual authority, and a ring, which represented his position as the Bishop of Rome. This image provides a fascinating glimpse into the fashion and iconography of the papacy during the Renaissance period, offering a window into the opulence and grandeur of the Catholic Church during this time. The intricate details of the illustration, from the rich colors to the intricate textures, serve as a testament to the skill and artistry of the artists and craftsmen of the time.
