In this poignant photograph, Princess Cecilie of Greece and Hesse (1911-1937), also known as Cecile, is captured with her three young children: Prince Ludwig (1931-37), Prince Alexander (1933-1937), and baby Princess Johanna (1936-39). Cecile was the wife of Prince Georg Donatus of Hesse & by Rhine, and the elder sister of Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh. The image, taken in 1936, portrays a happy family moment, with the children playfully interacting with their mother. However, this moment was short-lived as tragedy struck the family just a few years later. In 1937, on their way to a family wedding in London, Princess Cecilie, her husband, and their two sons were killed in a plane crash.
