Roshanara. Roshana, aka Olive Craddock (1894-1926), dancer
Roshana, aka Olive Craddock (1894-1926), dancer. The daughter of an English mother and Anglo-Indian father of Irish extraction, Craddock learned to dance as a child in India. She came to Europe in about 1909 and adopted the stage name Roshanara after a legendary Indian princess. She danced with Loie Fullers company and in 1911 appeared in London in Oscar Asches Kismet and took the role of Zobeide in Scheherazade with the Ballets Russes at Covent Garden. She joined Anna Pavlovas company in 1912 and eventually settled in America, where she died from appendicitis aged thirty-four. Pictured here strolling along 5th Avenue in New York, decked in all the glory of the Orient, creating a sensation even among the blase frequenters of that ultra-fashionable thoroughfare. Date: 1915
