EDITORS COMMENTS
In this historic photograph, the first aerial mail arrives at Windsor, Berkshire, England, on July 15, 1911. The Postmaster of Windsor, dressed in formal attire, is seen handing letters to a postman for delivery. The mail had been brought from Hendon Aerodrome by aviator Gustav Hamel, who stands next to the Mayor of Windsor, wearing a top hat. The arrival of the aerial mail marked a significant milestone in the history of transportation and communication. Hamel, a French-born British aviator, had flown the mail from Hendon in his biplane, becoming the first person to transport mail by air in Britain. The flight covered a distance of approximately 25 miles (40 kilometers) and took just over an hour to complete. The Mayor of Windsor, along with a large crowd of onlookers, gathered to witness the arrival of the mail, which was carried in a small leather satchel. Hamel's achievement demonstrated the potential of airplanes as a reliable and efficient means of transporting goods and communication, paving the way for the development of airmail services in the UK and around the world. This photograph captures a moment of innovation and progress, as the world began to embrace the possibilities of aviation and the potential it held for transforming the way we connect and communicate with one another. The image is a testament to the ingenuity and courage of early aviators like Gustav Hamel, who helped shape the future of transportation and communication.
