This historic photograph captures the momentous occasion of the roll out of the first Belfast-built Short Stirling bomber, N6000, on 12 October 1940. The Short Stirling was a four-engine heavy bomber aircraft produced by Short Brothers in Belfast, Northern Ireland, during World War II. The aircraft was a significant development for the British military, as it was the first British four-engine bomber to go into production. The roll out ceremony marked the completion of the aircraft's assembly phase and was an important step towards its maiden flight. The Short Stirling was a large and complex aircraft, with a wingspan of 102 feet and a length of 77 feet. It was designed to carry a heavy bomb load and had a crew of seven. The Rolls-Royce Merlin engines, which powered the Short Stirling, were visible in this photograph, as they were being installed prior to the roll out. The aircraft's distinctive radial engines were a key feature of its design and contributed to its distinctive appearance.
