EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the chaotic aftermath of an assassination attempt on King Alfonso XIII of Spain during his wedding day procession on May 31, 1906. The image was taken on Calle Mayor, Madrid's main street, following the explosion of a bomb thrown by anarchist Mateo Morral. King Alfonso XIII and his bride, Victoria Eugenie of Battenberg, were riding in an open carriage, surrounded by their entourage, when Morral, concealed in the crowd, hurled a bomb towards them. The bomb exploded prematurely, however, injuring several bystanders and causing panic among the crowd. The photograph shows the aftermath of the explosion, with the smoke rising from the scene and the chaos that ensued. The white wedding carriage, with its shattered windows, is seen in the upper right corner of the image, surrounded by the crowd, many of whom are seen fleeing in fear. The King and Queen are not visible in the photograph, having been quickly ushered away to safety. Mateo Morral, a member of the anarchist group 'Los Solidarios,' claimed responsibility for the attack, which was part of a series of violent anarchist attacks on the Spanish monarchy during this period. The attempt on the King's life failed, but it highlighted the political instability and social unrest that was prevalent in Spain at the time. This photograph is a poignant reminder of the dangers and uncertainty that surrounded the Spanish monarchy during the early 20th century and the impact that political violence had on everyday life in Madrid.
