Hobarts Funnies were a number of unusually modified tanks operated by the 79th
Hobarts Funnies were a number of unusually modified tanks operated by the 79th Armoured Division and the Royal Engineers. These specialized tanks were developed under the guidance of Major General Percy Hobart to overcome the problems of the planned Invasion of Normandy. They played a major part on the Commonwealth beaches during the landings and are the forerunners of the modern combat engineering vehicles we see on todays battlefield. Our picture shows: A modified Churchill tank using a Fascine: A bundle of wooden poles or rough brushwood lashed together with wires carried in front of the tank that could be released to fill a ditch or form a step. Metal pipes in the centre of the fascine allowed water to flow through. Circa June 1944

Hobart's Funnies - Pioneering the Future of Combat Engineering
EDITORS COMMENTS
. This print takes us back to the historic events of World War II, specifically during the planned Invasion of Normandy. Hobart's Funnies, a collection of ingeniously modified tanks operated by the 79th Armoured Division and Royal Engineers, played a pivotal role in overcoming obstacles on Commonwealth beaches during the D-Day landings. In this image, we witness one such innovation - a modified Churchill tank equipped with a Fascine. This remarkable contraption consisted of bundled wooden poles or rough brushwood lashed together with wires. Positioned at the front of the tank, it could be released to fill ditches or create steps for advancing troops. The metal pipes running through its center allowed water to flow freely. Major General Percy Hobart spearheaded these groundbreaking developments as he foresaw the challenges that awaited Allied forces in their quest for victory. His visionary approach paved the way for modern combat engineering vehicles seen on today's battlefields. As we delve into this snapshot from June 1944, let us remember and honor those brave soldiers who fought valiantly amidst chaos and uncertainty. Their unwavering determination and innovative spirit continue to inspire generations as they pushed boundaries and reshaped warfare tactics forever.
