Copper, Cornwall, England
An intricate dendritic growth of copper crystals. Also known as native copper, the specimen is pure copper, uncombined with any other elements. Some of the best dendritic (branching) specimens came from the Gwennap mines and, although the locality for this specimen is unknown, it is probable that it came from one of these mines, perhaps Wheal Unity. Copper lodes are widespread in Cornwall and, as a result, copper was one of the most significant metals mined in Cornwall

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the intricate beauty of a dendritic growth of copper crystals found in Copper, Cornwall, England. The specimen depicted is pure copper, devoid of any other elements, and commonly referred to as native copper. While the exact origin of this particular specimen remains unknown, it is highly likely that it originated from one of the renowned Gwennap mines such as Wheal Unity. Cornwall boasts widespread copper lodes throughout its terrain, making copper mining one of its most significant industries. This reddish-brown to orange-hued metallic mineral has been extensively mined in Cornwall for centuries. The branching nature of these arborescent formations gives them a tree-like appearance, earning them the name "dendriform". The photograph captures the crystalline structure and mesmerizing patterns formed by these branching copper crystals with remarkable precision. Every twist and turn reveals nature's artistic prowess at work within this geological wonder. Displayed proudly at Royal Cornwall Museum, this image by Mike Searle serves as a testament to Cornwall's rich mining heritage and highlights the sheer beauty hidden within Earth's depths. It invites viewers to marvel at both the scientific significance and aesthetic allure that minerals like native copper possess
