Wall Art and Photo Gifts from Royal Cornwall Museum
Scallop Fishermen, Fowey, Cornwall. January 1992
Fowey scallop fishermen, who were captured outside the Lugger Inn in a photograph in 1990, have been painted in oils. Sussex artist Pat Yendell saw the photo and was so impressed she decided to paint it. The result was loaned to the Lugger, and locals fundraised to buy a second painting which they commissioned from Pat, to be donated to the town. Fishermen, from left to right: Matthew Jane, Chris Curtis, Mike Dunn, Dave Thomas, Darren Vincent, Brendan Benson and Jason Powell, along with Spot the dog. Missing from this photograph is Mark Douglas, second from left in the painting. Photographer: Jonathan Barker

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a moment frozen in time, showcasing the resilient spirit of Fowey scallop fishermen in January 1992. Originally captured outside the iconic Lugger Inn by photographer Jonathan Barker, this image caught the attention of Sussex artist Pat Yendell, who was so moved by its authenticity that she decided to immortalize it through her masterful brushstrokes. Yendell's oil painting beautifully brings to life the camaraderie and hard work etched on the faces of these rugged fishermen. The artwork resonated deeply with locals, prompting them to rally together and fundraise for a second painting commissioned from Pat as a gift to their beloved town. In this vivid portrayal, we see Matthew Jane, Chris Curtis, Mike Dunn, Dave Thomas, Darren Vincent, Brendan Benson and Jason Powell standing proudly alongside Spot the dog. However, Mark Douglas is missing from this particular photograph but can be found positioned second from left in Yendell's remarkable painting. Adorned in traditional Cornish jumpers against a charming backdrop of pavement and pub ambiance; this piece effortlessly transports us back to an era when fishing was not just an occupation but also a way of life. Now housed at Royal Cornwall Museum as part of their treasured collection; it serves as a poignant reminder of Cornwall's rich maritime heritage and pays homage to those who dedicated their lives to braving the unpredictable seas for our sustenance.
