White blood cells and platelets, SEM C016 / 3098

White blood cells and platelets. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of platelets (purple) with a variety of different white blood cells (leucocytes, blue). Platelets, or thrombocytes, are fragments of white blood cells. When blood clots, red blood cells (erythrocytes) are trapped within a fibrin protein mesh (beige), which is formed in response to chemicals secreted by the platelets. White blood cells are involved in defending the body against both infectious disease and foreign materials. Magnification: x4500 when printed at 10 centimetres wide

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the intricate world of white blood cells and platelets within our immune system. In this colored scanning electron micrograph (SEM), we witness a mesmerizing display of purple platelets alongside an array of different blue leucocytes, or white blood cells. Platelets, also known as thrombocytes, are fragments derived from white blood cells. When blood clots, these platelets release chemicals that trigger the formation of a beige fibrin protein mesh. This mesh ensnares red blood cells (erythrocytes) and plays a crucial role in clotting. White blood cells take center stage in defending our bodies against infectious diseases and foreign materials. They act as guardians, tirelessly patrolling our bloodstream to identify and eliminate any potential threats to our health. The magnification level used for this image is an astounding x4500 when printed at 10 centimeters wide. Such high-resolution allows us to marvel at the intricacies of these defense mechanisms on a microscopic scale. Through this stunning visual representation captured by Steve Gschmeissner from Science Photo Library, we gain insight into the remarkable complexity and beauty that lies within our own biology. It serves as a reminder of the incredible machinery working ceaselessly inside us to keep us healthy and protected.
