White matter fibres of the human brain C018 / 6383
White matter fibres. Computer enhanced 3D diffusion spectral imaging (DSI) scan of the bundles of white matter nerve fibres in the brain. The fibres transmit nerve signals between brain regions and between the brain and the spinal cord. Diffusion spectrum imaging (DSI) is a variant of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in which a magnetic field maps the water contained in neuron fibers, thus mapping their criss-crossing patterns. A similar technique called diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) is also used to explore neural data of white matter fibres in the brain. Both methods allow mapping of their orientations and the connections between brain regions. Data/software: NIH Human Connectome Project /humanconnectomeproject.org)

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the intricate network of white matter fibres within the human brain. Enhanced through computer technology, this 3D diffusion spectral imaging (DSI) scan reveals the mesmerizing criss-crossing patterns formed by these nerve fibres. Serving as vital communication pathways, these bundles transmit crucial nerve signals between different regions of the brain and also connect it to the spinal cord. The technique employed in capturing this image is known as diffusion spectrum imaging (DSI), a variant of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). By utilizing a powerful magnetic field to map water molecules within neuron fibers, DSI allows for an accurate visualization of their orientations and connections throughout the brain. Another similar method called diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) is also utilized to explore neural data related to white matter fibres. Both DTI and DSI play pivotal roles in mapping out the complex neural architecture present within our brains. These advanced techniques enable researchers to gain valuable insights into how different regions are interconnected and how information flows across them. Such knowledge contributes significantly towards understanding various neurological conditions and developing effective treatment strategies. This remarkable photograph was made possible through data/software provided by NIH Human Connectome Project, an initiative dedicated to unraveling the mysteries of human brain connectivity. It serves as a testament to humanity's ongoing quest for unlocking one of nature's most enigmatic creations – our own minds.
