The Dark Tower, Cometary Globule in Scorpius

The Dark Tower, Cometary Globule in Scorpius. Bright rimmed globules and their more evolved cousin the cometary globule represent fascinating dynamic structures formed by the interplay of cold molecular clouds and hot ionizing stars. Typically the head of the globule faces a hot O-type star. Intense radiation from the star boils away lower density gas from the head. The evaporated rim of gas becomes ionized by the stars ultraviolet flux forming a bright glowing rim we associate with many of these globules including CG4. Intense stellar winds from the ionizing star evaporate gas and dust away from the head forming the tail and completing the cometary shape

The Dark Tower, Cometary Globule in Scorpius - A Celestial Masterpiece

EDITORS COMMENTS
. In this photograph captured by astrophotographer Robert Gendler, we are transported to the depths of the universe where a mesmerizing celestial structure known as "The Dark Tower" resides. Located within the constellation of Scorpius, this cometary globule showcases an awe-inspiring interplay between cold molecular clouds and hot ionizing stars. The image reveals a breathtaking sight - bright rimmed globules and their evolved cousin, the cometary globule. The head of these structures faces a scorching O-type star that emits intense radiation. As a result, lower density gas is boiled away from the head while its evaporated rim becomes ionized by the star's ultraviolet flux. This process forms a luminous glowing rim that characterizes many such globules including CG4. Furthermore, stellar winds generated by the powerful ionizing star sculpt a magnificent tail behind the globule, completing its cometary shape. The vibrant colors present in this cosmic artwork - ranging from pink to red - add to its ethereal beauty. This photograph not only showcases an exquisite example of nature's artistic prowess but also provides valuable insights into star formation processes and interstellar dynamics. It serves as a reminder of our infinitesimal place in the vastness of space and invites us to marvel at the wonders that lie beyond our earthly realm.
