The gypsies are leaving their hundred year old settlement on Hurtwood Hill in Surrey
The gypsies are leaving their hundred year old settlement on Hurtwood Hill in Surrey. They lived in huts, caravans and benders ( huts with branches bent over and covered with sacks ) - but now they are forsaking their picturesque homes and many of them are moving into corrugated iron bungalows at West Walton provided by the Surrey Council as alternative accomodation.
In their new homes, the gypsies will discard their Romany customs and follow the ways of civilisation.
Photo shows; children making bass brooms outside their bender at the Hurtwood Hill encampment.
